We never had prolonged arctic like temperatures to produce a lot of ground frost that would cause frost heaves and jeopardize our irrigation system pipes and sprinklers. All our greens, tees, and fairways have good color and very minimal disease issues. The course looks healthy and ready for the 2017 season. Off-Season Work & Clean-Up Projects: We were able to complete some brush clearing in the woods on the front 9 in areas that will help speed up play. We do have a lot of golf course cleanup to address, most of it sticks and leaves that came down from the multiple high wind storms we’ve had this season. We have 50+ acres of playable area to clean and we’ll need a good stretch of weather to get things going. It seems like most of our storms this winter, even as recent as last week contained high winds which led to an inordinate amount of small debris and large limbs coming down. I’ve brought back some of our seasonal staff early this year to help us move along quickly. 8th Green Construction: We’ve hired an architect to start with design and construction documents for the complete rebuild of the 8th green complex. My original plan was to start the construction at the end of the season this year sometime in late October. With the way the mild winter was going I decided to investigate the possibility of rebuilding the green this April. We then had substantial snow cover for a month and encountered wetlands and flood plain issues which then added a lengthy permitting process. We will not have enough time to get the new green built this April which I thought we had a chance of doing. Now we’re back to my original time table of a late fall construction with an early spring opening in 2018. New Fleet of Golf Carts: This year we are entering year 5 of our 5-year golf cart lease and we’re going to be terminating our existing lease agreement and drawing up a new agreement for 5- years for 60 brand new golf carts. Our existing fleet of golf carts consists of 45 carts, plus an additional 10 rentals that we’ve had to bring in the last 3 seasons, for a total of 55 carts. By redoing the lease agreement, we will be able to get 60 brand-new carts for the same price that we were paying for our 45 carts, +10 older rentals. In my opinion it was a no-brainer” to redo the lease. The new carts will have fuel injected engines for the first time and will offer better performance in cold weather with a 15% to 20% savings in fuel. It would be nice to eventually convert over to a full electric golf cart fleet, but the logistics and infrastructure to do that would be substantial. Additionally many of our carts still go out twice a day and the manufacturers cannot guarantee 36 holes on a once a day” battery charge. As battery technology improves hopefully in five years when it comes time for a new lease, switching over to electric carts will be feasible. I hope to have the new fleet sometime in early May. Back Deck Construction Project: As part of the 3-year contract agreement with our current concessionaire JPK Sun, Peter contributed $75,000 towards the proposed renovation of the old back deck and installing a permanent pavilion style roof with open sides. The project soon changed and expanded because of the requirement to construct handicap accessible ramps onto the back deck which is 2 feet lower than the existing floor of the snack bar. After discussions with Mayor Sullivan, he fully endorsed and encouraged expanding the project into a completely enclosed addition to the clubhouse along with a new attached outdoor deck. The new addition will more than double our inside seating capacity with additional seating on a new attached deck which will be covering the side lawn of the Able Terrace. The cathedral ceiling in the new addition will give us the necessary ceiling height to install 2 state-of-the-art golf simulators for operation each year starting this October through April for leagues, lessons, clinics, and general play. The addition will have its own heat and AC system and will be completely glassed in on all three sides offering great year round views of our golf course. As part of the project we’ll be raising the height of the old deck foundation and removing the 2 glass doors and windows, thus making one large function room so our outings and tournaments will be able to stay at the golf course. Mayor Sullivan has asked other Town Departments to assist us with the planning and construction of this edition and the response has been fantastic! This is an incredibly exciting project and it’s the largest renovation to the building since it was opened in 1986. With some good weather, we should be having a ribbon-cutting before the end of May. Practice Hitting Bay: I recently received a request this winter to install a practice hitting bay down next to the range tee. Purchase cost and installation looks to be about $1,600 for one commercial grade unit. We will not have the manpower or resources to get it installed by opening day, but once we get the course open for play and all our systems up and running we’ll get something up and going sometime in April. The 2016 Drought: The historic drought last year was a significant challenge for us the entire season. We all saw how the rivers dried up by early July and all of our ponds were at historically low levels by the end of the season. Thankfully, all the rain and snow has returned us to 100% capacity and in some areas we actually have minor flooding. Signs of the drought are still evident throughout the golf course with numerous areas of thin turf and in some areas no turf due to lack of sprinkler coverage and excessive golf cart traffic. It is imperative that we continue with the aeration of the fairways and some roughs along with some overseeding which will be taking place well into June. During the drought, not only was the quantity of water an issue, but the quality of water became an issue as well. The very low water levels in the irrigation pond left us with water that was very acidic with small traces of contaminants. Having the greens and tees go through the winter with open aeration holes...
